Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

The #1 Reasons Homeowners File a Homeowners Claim

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage is responsible for more homeowner insurance claims than fires, storms or theft.  However, it is often easily preventable.

For example, four in 10 homeowners never bother to check a washing machine's hose line.  Chances are, sooner or later, those lines will fail.  The same follows for dishwasher hoses, automatic ice-make lines and hot water heaters.  As they age, they all pose hidden dangers.

It is simply a matter of time before hose lines fail, and when they do, it's usually quite expensive.  Preventive maintenance is the best solution.  We advise:

  • Check hoses for kinks and cracks every time you do the laundry.  Replace your washing machine hoses every five years with a high pressure hose, preferably a durable metal-mesh hose.  These hoses cost only $5 to $10.
  • Check for signs of leaks, inspect flooring around your water heater and other fixtures or appliances.
  • Inspect refrigerator, dishwasher and outside faucet lines for leaks and crimps.  If you move appliances to clean, please be careful not to overextend or pinch hoses.

The danger of a water leak is that if it's not addressed right away, even a small leak can cause thousands of dollars of damage to your floors and walls.  It's the water you can't see that may cause the most damage.
